Jalen Brunson and OG Anunoby each scored 23 points as the New York Knicks reached the Eastern Conference finals for the first time since 2000 by steamrolling the visiting Boston Celtics 119-81 in Game 6 of their second-round series.
Mikal Bridges had 22 points and Karl-Anthony Towns added 21 points and 12 rebounds for third-seeded New York, which led by as many as 41 points on Friday. The Knicks wrapped up the best-of-seven series with the largest winning playoff margin in franchise history.
“There’s more to go,” Bridges said. “We’re not done. We came out there tonight and played hard and handled business. But our season is not over. We have much more to go.”
New York surpassed a 36-point playoff victory over the Milwaukee Bucks in the decisive Game 5 of the 1970 Eastern Division finals.
Josh Hart contributed 10 points, 11 rebounds and 11 assists to record New York’s first postseason triple-double since Walt Frazier accomplished the feat in 1972.
“I want to congratulate the Celtics on a terrific season,” Knicks coach Tom Thibodeau said. “Unfortunate injury to Jayson Tatum. They’re a terrific organisation, ownership, front office, Joe Mazzulla is a terrific coach, great players.“They’re not going to hand you anything. You have to earn it.”
The Knicks will open the conference finals at home against the fourth-seeded Indiana Pacers on Wednesday.
Defending NBA champion Boston was led by Jaylen Brown, who had 20 points, six rebounds and six assists before fouling out late in the third quarter. The Celtics were again short-handed after losing Tatum to a ruptured right Achilles during Game 4 on Monday.
“Upset or not, we beat a great team,” Brunson said. “They obviously lost a huge piece (in Tatum). The way they came out in Game 5, they’re still a good team. Regardless of what anyone thinks – upset or not – we’re just happy to come out of the series with a win and now we’ll prepare for another team.”
New York shot 46.2 percent from the field, including 16 of 45 (35.6 percent) from 3-point range. The Knicks held a 55-36 rebounding advantage.
Payton Pritchard scored 11 points and Al Horford added 10 for Boston, which shot 36 percent and was 12 of 40 (30 percent) from 3-point range.
The score was tied at 16 before the Knicks began pulling away.
New York led 26-20 at the end of the first quarter and then opened the second with a 16-4 surge to open up an 18-point lead midway through the period.
After Boston’s Luke Kornet interrupted the burst with a three-point play, the Knicks rattled off 16 of the next 21 points to take a 58-32 lead on a putback dunk by Miles “Deuce” McBride with 1:31 left.
McBride buried a 3-pointer as time expired in the half for a 64-37 lead at the break. That marked New York’s largest halftime advantage at the break since leading the Los Angeles Lakers 69-42 in Game 7 of the 1970 Finals, won by the Knicks.
“You win a championship and you have that target on your back from Day 1,” Celtics guard Derrick White said of falling well short of winning back-to-back NBA titles. “There’s ups and downs through every season. This part sucks and we didn’t complete the goal that we set out to get.”
The contest was effectively over when Brown fouled out with 2:50 left in the third quarter and Boston down by 33. Anunoby poured it on with consecutive 3-pointers to end a 10-0 push as the margin went above 40 at 92-51 with 1:51 remaining in the third.
“They played better than we did,” Mazzulla said. “I’m happy for Thibs [Thibodeau]. He’s been coaching for a long time. That’s the biggest thing. You pay your dues, you put forth everything. That guy is a lifer. He’s what a coach is all about and he deserves it. And they deserve it as a team. You got to take your hat off to them.”

Sri Lanka Under-19 women’s team, led by Manudi Nanayakkara, will begin their campaign in the ICC Under-19 Women’s World Cup when they meet Malaysia in their opening game on January 19 in Kuala Lumpur.
Before the World Cup, Sri Lanka played two warm-up games against Bangladesh and Samoa. Sri Lanka lost to Bangladesh in the first warm-up game but recorded an easy 76-run win over Samoa, which is making its first World Cup appearance.
Sri Lanka and Bangladesh tied their four-match T20 series in Sri Lanka, each winning two games. Sri Lanka took the first two matches but were defeated in the last two.
In their first warm-up game for the Malaysia T20 World Cup, Sri Lanka suffered another defeat to Bangladesh, extending their losing streak to three matches. However, the second warm-up match was a dominant performance against a less experienced Samoa side. Sri Lanka’s bowlers excelled, led by leg-spinner Limansa Thillakaratne, who took 5 for 6. She was well-supported by 15-year-old Chamodi Munasinghe (3 for 6) and Aseni Thalagune (2 for 7). Samoa was bowled out for just 38 runs in 12.4 overs, chasing Sri Lanka’s total of 114.
Sri Lanka relies heavily on their spinners, with 16-year-old wrist-spinner Shashini Gimhani, a senior national team member, carrying a key role in the World Cup. Sri Lanka faced Malaysia in the recent Asia Cup in Malaysia, winning by 94 runs. Skipper Manudi Nanayakkara led with a 40-ball 74 as Sri Lanka scored 153/4, while Malaysia managed only 59/6 in 20 overs. Facing Malaysia again on January 19, Sri Lanka aims to repeat this performance to boost their morale and start the tournament strong.
Sri Lanka, Malaysia, West Indies, and defending champions India are in Group A for the World Cup. Sri Lanka will play West Indies on January 21 and India on January 23. The team plans to focus on one match at a time. After their recent win against Malaysia in the Asia Cup under similar conditions, Sri Lanka looks to minimise mistakes and win again.
Head coach Mahesh Weerasinghe, with the support of batting coach Rivin Pieris and bowling coach Omesh Wijesiriwardena, is focused on preparing the team. The squad has gained valuable experience from playing in a tri-national tournament with England and Australia in Sri Lanka, as well as playing against Australia and New Zealand in Brisbane. Their exposure to conditions similar to those in Malaysia during the Asia Cup gives them an edge. However, the World Cup will showcase top teams, and intense competition is expected.
The 41-game event will feature 16 teams, just like the inaugural edition in 2023, and will conclude with the final on February 2.
Under-19 Women’s Team Groupings for the T-20 World Cup:

Veteran Sri Lankan cricketer Angelo Mathews has expressed his frustration over the national team’s meagre Test cricket schedule, highlighting the concerning lack of opportunities to play the longest format. Taking to social media, Mathews tweeted:
“Absolutely shocking to hear that Sri Lanka is only playing 4 Test matches this entire year, including the Aus tests this month @ICC.”
Troubling Signs for Test Cricket in Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka’s Test schedule paints a grim picture for the future of the format outside the dominant cricketing nations of India, Australia, and England. The 2025 calendar begins with a two-Test series against Australia but is followed by a lengthy five-month gap before another two-Test series against Bangladesh. Beyond this, there is a 12-month break before Sri Lanka’s next scheduled Test match in mid-2026—a concerning gap that could hinder player development and team cohesion.
A Bleak Outlook for 2026
The year 2026 offers little consolation, with Sri Lanka playing just six Tests across the entire year. This includes two-match series against the West Indies in June, India in August, and Pakistan between October and November. The stark contrast to the packed schedules of cricket’s powerhouses underscores the growing disparity in opportunities to play Test cricket.
Mathews’ remarks bring attention to a pressing issue for nations outside the so-called “Big Three,” raising concerns about the sustainability and global appeal of Test cricket.
Cricket Australia (CA) has responded to legendary Indian batter Sunil Gavaskar’s disappointment over not being invited to present the Border-Gavaskar Trophy after the fifth Test between India and Australia. Gavaskar expressed his discontent at being excluded from the presentation ceremony, despite being at the venue. However, CA clarified that Gavaskar had been informed earlier that he would present the trophy to Indian captain Jasprit Bumrah if India retained it. Since Australia won the series, Allan Border was chosen to present the trophy to Australian captain Pat Cummins.
In a statement, a CA spokesperson acknowledged the oversight, stating, “We recognize that it would have been preferable for both Allan Border and Sunil Gavaskar to share the stage during the presentation.”
Border handed the trophy to the Australian team, but Gavaskar, despite his presence, was not included in the ceremony. Addressing the issue, Gavaskar expressed his disappointment, saying, “It shouldn’t matter who wins when it comes to the presentation. It’s the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, representing Australia and India. I would have been delighted to present it alongside my good friend Allan Border.”
The Border-Gavaskar Trophy, contested between India and Australia since 1996-1997, has become one of Test cricket’s most celebrated rivalries. This five-match series, won by Australia, set record attendance figures at several venues, including breaking an 87-year-old record at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.
India has pledged to provide unconditional support for the development of sports in Sri Lanka, the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports said.
This commitment was made during a meeting between Indian High Commissioner Santosh Jha and Sri Lanka’s Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports, Sunil Kumara Gamage.
The Indian High Commissioner expressed that support will be extended for sports development initiatives across the country, focusing on a range of sports, including cricket.
He emphasised the goal of further strengthening bilateral ties, particularly in the field of youth affairs.
High Commissioner Jha also invited Sri Lanka’s Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports to visit the Indian Youth Affairs Division as part of this collaboration.
The meeting was attended by Deputy Minister of Youth Affairs Eranga Gunasekara and Deputy Minister of Sports Sugath Thilakaratne.
