The Prisons Department reports a shortage of 1,800 prison officers.
Prisons Spokesperson Gamini B. Dissanayake stated that this shortage of officers has impacted search operations.
He also mentioned that the capacity of inmates in prisons nationwide has increased to 300% of their intended capacity.
Proposals have been made to obtain technological assistance for the screening of inmates, according to the prison spokesperson.
